happy to let them spend money and resources to figure out what went wrong. >> stephanie: please. spend all of your money on that. >> ann: stop it! >> stephanie: jacki schechner. >> good morning, everybody. violence continuing today between israeli forces and hamas as shelling and air strikes have killed more than 90 people in the gaza strip. israeli military forces say they've hit some 80 terrorist sites throughout the territory. two rockets exploded over tel aviv yesterday. israel's anti-missile system stopped them in mid air. but in israel, three people have been killed and another 68 reported wounded. world leaders are hoping to be able to bring an end to the violence through diplomacy. so far israel is threatening to deploy ground troops into gaza. if that can't be done, senator john mccain suggested sunday the u.s. send president bill clinton to help freshet peace since he has hands-on experience in the middle east. so far the u.n. secretary general, the french foreign minister and israeli

representatives are trying to come to a resolution along with egyptian negotiators in cairo. hamas is saying that israel can stop the fighting simply by agreeing to hamas' demands. they're claiming israel is begging for a truce. a claim that israel vehemently denies. in other lighter news this morning, let's turn back to u.s. political news where representative alan west is still buried in denial. he won his bid for a recount of early ballots in st. lucie county but he is still losing when it comes to keeping his congressional seat in florida's district 18. in fact, democratic patrick murphy picked up some 300 more votes over the weekend bringing his total to about 2,000. west is still refusing to concede the election saying that he plans to review the result and additional data in order to decide how to move forward. murphy has claimed victory and it is very clear that west is probably all done. we're back with more steph after the break.

these talking points, that the right have, about the "heavy hand of government" ... i want to have that conversation. let's talk about it. really? you're going to lay people off because now the government is going to help you fund your healthcare. really? i want to have those conversations, not to be confrontational, but to understand what the other side is saying, and i'd like to arm our viewers with the ability to argue with their conservative uncle joe over the dinner table.

fast and furious and important questions about this gun program and turned it into this joke. and they just scream it over and over to the point where nobody is going to care about anything. in the end nobody cared about fast and furious and in the end i'm afraid that no one is going to care about what happened to benghazi because they've turned it into this partisan joke and this entire scandal in the last couple of days, has been reduced to word choice for the intelligence talking points that were given to the white house immediate aftermath. they want a watergate style investigation to determine who picked the words for that memo. it is amazing. >> stephanie: i know. as usual i've been quoting you all morning as i do. it proves the network won't change. it points to a larger problem for the republican party. you say in the wake of romney's loss last week, conservative voices raise concerns about the

state of right wing press and how the conservative entertainment complex as writer david fromme called it has fleece and exploited followers by purposely misinforming them about the issues of the day. but anyway, quote steve schmitt who lamented how much the power and influence of the g.o.p. noise machine has over republican leadership. it is a big issue for them. >> it is. it is almost impossible for them to divorce themselves from the right wing media. we heard more criticism of mitt romney particularly the republican governor's association going after him for the gift comments he made which was sort of another version of the 47% comment. they're saying you can't talk to voters that way. noy, jindal from -- you know,endle from louisiana saying this is what the republican party has to get away from. who practically authored the 47% comments? who cheered romney's gift

comments? fox news, rush limbaugh. they love this stuff. i wrote about it during the campaign. you know. republican operatives who run campaigns for a living and know or think they know how to win independent voters look at fox news and say you are killing us. you are driving the party into the ground. you can't -- you can't do blunt. you can't win national elections or statewide elections and follow the fox news formula because it turns so many people off. next four years, that's what they're going to having to grapple with. >> stephanie: you get to the crux of it. o'reilly hannity they're drawing seven and eight figure salaries. you think they're going to change fox news so the g.o.p. can better communicate with independents and pick up senate seats, think again. they answer to nielsen. obama's presidency has been good to the g.o.p. noise machines. bottom line, it is possible conservatives last week were only angered because they were

the ones suckered about i the doom narrative pushed by the conservative press because fox kept its viewers wrapped in a gauzy bubble about a country that lost regard for its president. so you know, when the reality turned out to be the opposite, as you said, this screen shot summed it up perfectly on rush limbaugh's web site. everything except the poll points to a romney landslide. >> everything except the debt and everything except common sense. they were really upset that they were misled. they thought romney had it in the bag. obama was going to lose in a landslide so the question is not were they just yep sut base they were -- upset because they were misled by the election or are they genuinely upset about having a conservative movement that is chronically misinformed about -- as i wrote you know, the issues of the day. not just about polls. not just about campaigns. but about everything.

and if that is -- if they understand that that's a long-term problem and you can't have a republican party that is purposely misinformed. and you know, you mentioned obama has been very good for the bottom line. for fox news and things like that. this is a classic example of how fox news has hijacked the conservative movement, republican party. they're not interested in getting people elected anymore. they're interested in their bottom line. >> stephanie: they want to feel better. people that watch. i told a story back during the bush years eric, it was a friend of a friend, i walked in, republican. she had fox news on in the house. somehow -- the run-up after iraq. she's like well, we found -- we found weapons of mass destruction in iraq and i was like what? no. turn off fox news. it is hard for me to believe on either side of the partisan divide you want to be completely misinformed.

i guess there's big money in it for fox. >> it raises the question of why do people watch fox news? do they watch to be purposely misinformed? time and again they have been told that this -- you know, solyndra, fast and furious and benghazi and obama's losing the election. you know, it is sort of like charlie brown and lucy. how many times do they realize that nothing that they're watching on fox is accurate? i don't think there is a time. i think that's why they watch fox news to be purposely and chronically misinformed. i don't think there's ever going to be an ah-ha moment. there would have been two or three years ago. so it is this very weird -- it is not the normal relationship that news consumers have with the news organization. where they're interested in the truth or maybe you know, a little rose glass view, a little partisan -- to make them feel better. this is just a total alternate

universe that they want to live in. >> stephanie: you know what i thought summed it up, one romney supporter, when it was -- the minute it was announced in his -- whatever, headquarters that he lost, this woman just was shocked. she said what? how could anybody have voted for him for president obama. because not everybody watches fox news. that's what i mean. like you said, it is an alternate reality. let's dive into the alternate reality. >> the other thing that i love about that press conference is how president obama uses personal faux outrage to blunt criticism when ed henry asks the question about susan rice. it was more -- not an attack on her. it was an attack on him. he felt as though how dare you -- how dare you do this. it seemed a bit condescending. >> it was exactly the opposite. >> exactly. it had nothing to do with him. obama was asking the very plain

question. why are they going after susan rice? why are they going after the u.n. ambassador? this benghazi controversy this watergate-style scandal, you know, revolves around what did someone say on tv six weeks ago? and the other thing the other argument that drove me crazy in the right wing media that was pushed on fox and other places was that obama was defending susan rice because he felt like people were picking on women. that's not a very modern view on equality. of course, nothing he said in that press conference ever had anything -- anything to do with -- >> the buck stops here. >> he said it more than once. >> stephanie: you know what is sexist is having to bring kelly ayotte to your press conference so you don't look like -- >> we've got a chick. >> it was very enlightening in

that obama one of the few times he has pushed back hard on any topic really in a personal way and you know, the fox news and the right wing media went bonkers. they claimed he flew off the handle. he was an angry black man or engaging in sexism or the gut -- they reverse it and claim he's a narcissist. they don't know what to make of him when he fights back. >> stephanie: there's one thing i enjoy more than newt gingrich discussing pa pa tray' -- petraeus' infidelity -- >> malfeasance have been in this administration. i work for a president who every morning at 8:00, he got a briefing. it took him a total of 45 minutes to make a decision to take down the aircraft that was escaping with the terrorists who hijacked. i know what it is like to work for a president who pays attention. that's not what this administration is, sean.

this event would not have transpired as it did. the cover-up would have been unnecessary and you might as well have saved four american lives and a diplomatic mission. >> stephanie: did the beirut bombing not happen on president bush's watch? >> i've been tweeting about it. it doesn't really get mentioned that much. you know the beirut embassy was bombed in april of '83 64 people dead. the beirut barracks was bombed october of '83. and 220 dead. and in an 18-month span, three attacks on the u.s. embassy or consulate or barracks in beirut. 330 people were killed. what was the national security response from the reagan administration? nothing. nothing. zero. weinberger was afraid because he didn't want to rile up the arab world and caspar weinberger

>> i did an analysis pretty much saying the same thing. i think that's what mitt romney -- by the way, to put into context, he was speaking to campaign donors. he was explaining look, he gave me all of this money. one of the reasons i didn't win was i couldn't overcome the entitlement society. that was my analysis as well. when you get tremendous amount of money flowing out of washington into certain hands that -- the hands receiving that money -- are not going to want it to stop. so therefore they're going to -- which they did income under $30,000 overwhelmingly broke for barack obama. >> stephanie: keep going. keep digging right eric? >> yeah. one of the things that makes no sense about that is so social security medicare, all right. some of the most money flowing out of washington. what demographic did obama not do well with at all?

which did not happen and b, to make sure, you know, rich people never have to pay more taxes which is not going to happen either. even bill crystal now is saying sort of lip service to the tea party to even include them. they're just not a factor. nothing that they stood for has come to fruition. >> stephanie: we end with a heaping helping of limbaugh. >> hostess failing is a great opportunity to blame republicans for it. the democrats are taking a long view here. they're playing the long game. the long game is wiping out the republican party. not saving 18,000 measesly jobs -- measly jobs. those people will get 99 weeks of unemployment compensation, they'll get food stamps, hold on to their phones and tv sets. they'll eat. obama will take care of them. in the meantime, he gets to blame romney. bain capital and the republicans for the fact that the company has failed. >> stephanie: i can understand his grief at the loss -- [ laughter ]

good morning representative adam schiff. i can see you. >> good morning. how are you? >> stephanie: i'm good, stir, how are you? >> good. >> stephanie: i was saying, we heard obviously what happened friday when general petraeus testified. i thought okay is john mccain going to apologize to susan rice and can we move on as a country. i guess the answer's no. >> well, no. apparently not. i think the general was very clear. there was no politicization of the talking points, white house interference, none of the conspiracy theories that have been spun have the least bit of evidence to support them and i wish we could move on and put our focus where it should be on finding those responsible and bringing this emto justice. -- them to justice. >> stephanie: we've been talking about this all morning representative. we were talking in particular after the bombing when reagan was in, you just have to think back to a time where we didn't politicize that. i don't remember people attacking riggan personally. >> we looked at that as a tragedy.

>> i think that's exactly right. and we've come -- unfortunately far field from the days when politics stopped at the water's edge. they just get warmed up now. >> stephanie: i'm going -- apparently you missed the controversy that apparently the white house did change a word from consulate to -- [ ♪ dramatic ♪ ] something. >> diplomatic post. >> ah-ha! >> stephanie: it is like somebody said the election is over. they're still trying to play gotcha politics. what is going on, do you think? >> i hoped this would end when the election came and went and we could move on and do other things. but there are some who can't let this go and are determined to cling to this tired exhausted unsubstantiated conspiracy theory. you would have to believe that general petraeus and clapper and the director of the c.i.a. and the grand conspiracy to do what?

>> stephanie: which involved eric cantor apparently. it is quite elaborate isn't it? >> it is. i think it is so unjust to criticize our u.n. ambassador who has done an extraordinary job. marshaled the most biting sanctions against iran in history. for relying on what the intelligence community said was their best assessment of the situation. if she had departed from that, if she had speculated on her own about who was involved, then she would have been open to real criticism. would have been attacked for deviating from what the intelligence committee told her. >> stephanie: general petraeus said what was in there was in there because you don't want to tip off terrorist groups. it was classified, some of the information. >> exactly. >> stephanie: maybe i'm missing something representative. what is the controversy? why -- and then general petraeus, as we know, is a republican appointed by a republican president and has

been a hero to the right. john mccain doesn't believe him? i don't understand. >> it is very unclear. the whole theory i have hard to wrap your head around. they seem to be pointed to the fact that general petraeus said that he felt it was terrorism from the beginning. well when you're firing mortars and rpgs at the american diplomatic post, yes that's terrorism. the question though is who was responsible? what terrorists? should we have seen it coming? how much of it was preplanned? and those are questions that we're still investigating and while people are quick to point out in the g.o.p. that general petraeus says he knew it was terrorism from the beginning they forget that the general also thought there was a protest there that preceded the attack on the diplomatic post. so they're being very selective in what they say the general was assured of in the beginning because on the point of the demonstrations, the general and the rest of the intelligence community was wrong. >> stephanie: right.

representative, you're on the house intelligence committee. there were what? 20 intelligence reports, many of them mentioned didn't they, that some of the attackers said it was in protest of the video or the other protests going on in cairo didn't they? >> there were many conflicting intelligence streams coming in which took time for the community to sort out and yes absolutely. some of them very plainly stated or suggested there were demonstrations going on. this is why it was so hard to unravel. it is not as if the intelligence community reached that conclusion out of thin air. it now turns out that they were wrong about that point. but they told us at the time that this assessment may and likely will change as we get better information. here we were members of congress, hungry for any insights they could give us. and we didn't seem to pay attention to the warnings they gave us that this information is very tenuous. and you know, i feel -- >> stephanie: jim was saying in the middle, it is like in the middle of a criminal

investigation announcing who you think did it and where they live. you don't do that. you don't tip people off when something is on-going, right? >> that's right. there will be some real adverse consequences to the politicization of this whole thing. number one the intelligence community is never going to want to share an initial assessment with us again and in those early hours and days after an attack, we want to know as much as they can tell us and now you can imagine how shy they will be in sharing any initial information and second, you know, they've been so castigated over these talking points, it's quite clear they never want to give us unclassified statements again. and that too is a disservice because in the wake of a tragedy, if we don't know what we can properly say to the public, then there is a risk that inadvertently people say things they shouldn't. so we're already -- all of the casualties. probably the biggest one is we've taken our eyes off the bad

guys who committed the heinous acts. >> stephanie: right. representative, one of your colleagues representative -- roughers burger said this -- >> yeah. >> he was very sorry that this incident occurred and that anything that occurred with respect to his personal situation had nothing to do with his -- the way he handled benghazi. >> stephanie: this is the problem is that as we've talked about, we have a place called fox news that is sort of like this right wing -- i don't know what did david fromme call if, entertainment complex that seems to be out of touch with the facts. they're actively trafficking conspiracy theories over there. the affair is somehow connected to the cover-up and his personal thing was somehow orchestrated to keep him in line. how far down this rabbit hole are we going? >> i don't know. to begin with, i find the whole overramping theory a little bewildering. the administration wanted to downplay the terrorism part of this because it was inconsistent

with the -- we've been successful going after al-qaeda narrative. the problem with that, of course, is if the administration had focused on the terrorism aspect and risked disclosing classified information et cetera, it would have then been accused of playing the terrorism card, an effort to get the president to rally around. >> stephanie: how does that jive with the president saying the next day act of terror. >> exactly. we're playing over in a congress the whole debate he had with mitt romney over when it was called terrorism and what the significance of that was. but you would hope that that would have ended with a campaign but it has lived on. >> stephanie: the problem like you say, it is -- he called it an act of terror. a, he won't give us more information because it is going to tip off terrorist groups. b, because we didn't know all of the information yet. >> the reality is we still don't know all of the information. we're still working on this. there are still a lot of unanswered questions. i'm just glad that the pickering

commission is doing their work to address the security issues. they'll come up with -- i think some good, credible insights into what happened in terms of the security there and what changes we need to make. these suggestions that we form a watergate-style committee in the congress, that would just be a -- an unmitigated nightmare of partisan wrangling considering what's going on already. >> john mccain may want to attend the briefings instead of having a press conference then he might have more information. >> i suspect we'll get a lot over the next four years. anything to justify impeaching obama. they're going to dig up all kinds of nonsense. >> stephanie: somebody on fox news, representative said if the president lied blah, blah, blah. wait what how are you getting to that premise? >> people quite recklessly just drop whatever allegation they want without any substance. first, the allegation was that the white house deliberately changed the talking points to do
